Introduction to Public Forum Debate

3 classes, 3 weeks

Intro to PF debate is for students completely new to the activity looking to build excellent foundational skills and learn the fundamentals of thinking and speaking persuasively.

Over three engagement-heavy classes, we comprehensively cover all the basics of PF debate, including flowing, research, prepping, and extemporaneous speaking,

This course is centered primarily around foundations, meaning it not only introduces students to debate but also builds the habits that we believe produce the most excellent thinkers and debaters down the line.

Public Forum Skill Builder

5 classes / 2 practice sessions, 5 weeks

Public Forum Skill Builder is a formative course for students familiar with PF and relatively new to competition looking to develop their skills to a more advanced level. Designed with competitive development in mind, this course turns basic familiarity into true proficiency.

With five classes and two dedicated practice sessions, we cover both all the basic skills at a more competitively practical level while also diving into more advanced aspects of debate such as round vision, topic strategy, judge adaptation, and time efficiency.

While most courses at this level begin to approach debate formulaically, in this course we double down on critical thinking and emphasize the importance of being able to use one’s mind alone to be successful in debate.

Advanced Strategy in Public Forum

5 classes / 3 practice sessions, 5 weeks

Advanced Strategy in PF is for talented debaters looking to compete on the varsity level and develop their skills beyond the formulaic habits taught in introductory classes.

Over five classes and three dedicated practice sessions, we cover and heavily practice all aspects of debate with a new level of nuance. Topics include all skills taught in the introduction and Skill Builder classes with an additional focus on narrative construction, recognizing ballot threats, and the balance between abstraction and specificity. We also dive into more technical areas of debate such as theory, Ks (critical theory), and framework frequently found on the national circuit.

While this course is an opportunity for debaters to develop advanced skills, it is ultimately up to the student to actively improve at this level - we can provide the resources to improve but cannot internalize them for students as we can at introductory levels.
